The Global Digital Library initiative was undertaken to showcase and provide access to digital collections held in national libraries worldwide.

Codec developed a prototype to harvest and provide discovery services. It consisted of:

Back-end components: Harvester, Metadata Database, Search Index, Updater - for updating the Search Index with metadata updates.

Front-end components: Web Application for accessing and tagging digital objects.

As part of the Digital NZ programme, the back-end components were upgraded to standardise on the Java platform (existing components used PHP) and to enhance the Harvester for performance and the types of sources that can be harvested. The interface between the front-end and the back-end was also changed.

Codec was able to leverage their specific architectural knowledge and capabilities, in close cooperation with the DigitalNZ project team. An important contributor to delivery was the combined agile project management approach using Scrum.

The GDL was successfully piloted by Spain’s National Library.
